Every day and with every meal, we take in a variety of food in the form of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and liquid to provide it with energy and building blocks.
To be digested – absorbed from the intestine into the blood - the food must first be crushed and broken down into its molecular components. This is a long process taking a total of about 30 to 40 hours. Our digestion already starts in the mouth – the teeth cut and crush the food.
Salivary enzymes break down the first chemical bonds in the mouth. This food mush is salivated for smooth swallowing into the stomach. There, antimicrobial stomach acids wait to break down the food even further.
